Born: Alexandria, VA

Professional: Johannah Zabal grew up in the northern Virginia area as a multi-sport athlete, participating in soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball.  She would later focus her attention on volleyball and earn a scholarship to the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, MD. In her two years at Catonsville, she started as a right-side hitter and defensive specialist, helping her team to an 11th spot in the nation at the NJCAA National Championships and a 22-6 and 23-6 record her freshmen & sophomore seasons, respectively. She also co-coached a high school club volleyball team both years in her off-season.  Upon graduating from Catonsville, she took a year off to refine her career interests. In this time, she began working at a local gym, which sparked her interest in training.  She decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion Management at Marymount University and graduated summa cum laude in 2007. Johannah also started on the volleyball team at Marymount as a defensive specialist and right-side hitter and helped lead her team to a 7-0 record in the Capital Athletic Conference and a regular season championship in her senior season.

During her senior internship at Velocity Sports Performance, Johannah was introduced to the world of strength & conditioning and developed a passion for it. After being a collegiate athlete, she could relate to the demands of a high level of athletic performance and the toll it can take on an athlete’s systems.  She sought to learn how to maximize an athlete’s abilities through education and specialized training. While at Velocity, she progressed from intern to Assistant Sports Performance Director & Internship Coordinator within two years.  Now, as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Functional Movement Specialist (FMS), and Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT), Johannah has experience training collegiate, semi-professional, professional, and amateur adult athletes, as well as adult populations, teams, and youth.  She has trained a wide array of athletes, which consists of collegiate & high school football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, hockey, track, and baseball athletes.

With her passion for athletics & sports performance, she brings over 10 years of coaching experience into each training session. Johannah currently acts as the assistant volleyball coach at Marymount University, where she attended college and played for the team. She has also developed the volleyball team’s strength and conditioning pre-season training programs and pre-game warm-ups for the past two years, working closely with the athletes, coaches, and athletic trainers to provide a well-rounded program to the team. Along with coaching, Johannah is a full-time graduate student and teaching assistant at the George Washington University, pursuing her Master of Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength & Conditioning. There, she teaches undergraduate classes & works in the exercise physiology lab.
